[ She'd picked up the call while half-asleep- despite her claims of ultra-responsibility, she's not very good at resting- and, for a moment, Cass thinks she's started dreaming.
But, no, she's not. She knew something was up the moment Rex started speaking. And of fucking course this would be her luck. Rex may hear her starting to stammer for a moment before she gets words out, her voice raised. ]
Wh- What the fuck happened!? What are you talking about? [ As she speaks, she starts processing what he's really said. ] Who'd he attack?
I heard a commotion downstairs. When I got there, Woden was there, holding a knife to my --
[ He makes a frustrated, unhappy sound in the back of his throat. Rex is, at heart, a compartmentalizer. He has people separated into categories. My brothers, my soldiers, my friends, my allies, my commanding officers, my acquaintances.
He has no easy category for Martin. He's not his kid and Rex certainly isn't his father, nor is he his brother, nor is he his friend. All he knows is that Martin is his. ]
Martin. The kid I've been taking care of. Martin's safe now, hiding - and I've put Woden down for now. The only reason he's not dead after what he pulled is because I needed to hear what he had to say for himself. Thought you might need to talk to him too.
[ It's rare that Cassandra is stunned into silence, but she pauses for a moment before speaking. She's trying to make what Rex is telling her align with what she knows of Woden- but that isn't easy.
Woden is a killer, yes. She knows that well. But breaking into someone's home? To murder a child? Not only is that far less careful than how Woden usually is, it also doesn't match his usual motives. Killing a kid just makes you a monster, even more than he already was; it isn't an extensive quest for power, the way his plans usually are.
She can only think of one explanation. ]
I...okay, I'll come over, if you really think you can keep a hold on him. [ It's Woden. He may have something up his sleeve. ] But you should know- I think this might have something to do with these weird-ass clones people have been seeing around. Woden's a dangerous fuckwad, but this is...different from his usual shit. A lot different.
[ She'd like to tell Rex about his doppelganger, too. But now's not the time. ]
[ Damn, damn, damn. He hadn't even paused to consider that this wasn't the real thing. That complicates matters, doesn't it? At the very least, this would be one less thing to hold against the real thing - though Rex won't mind holding it against him anyway. He's unreasonable like that. ]
Either way, you may get something useful out of him so all of this wasn't for nothing. I can hold him, but come quickly. Let yourself in. I won't be letting him out of my sight.
Yeah, I'm on my way. Seriously, do not let him get away with anything. You fucking know that already, but- he's a builder. For all we know he has drones around or some shit.
