[ She reaches a hand up to stop him, but she thinks he gets the memo. ]
So- you know not to do that now, I guess? Not that it was your fault, like I said. Something that small shouldn't hurt you that bad. [ Darkovs: more fucked up the more she learns! ]
That's why we train a lot... [he hesitates.] I mean, most...most of the others are a lot better already, so it's not common. Except Ivan, but that's...I mean, I'm still...conjuring something bigger than me. I have to figure out how to make it...more manageable, still.
I have been fortunate enough not to deal with the media here as I have had to back home. I understand better now, however. Your life is your own; not to be spectated on by strangers.
[ She huffs. ] Okay, then. I mean- what if we got someone to train you? Someone who has an idea of how your powers work? Could Andy or Rex help?
[ Cassandra, after all, isn’t a physical fighter. But she likes to solve things by making plans, and honestly, she suspects Martin likes things that way too. ]
Yep! [he claps his hands together.] Oh, you'll like this. Right. We have both!
So, ah, there's a rites you go through that involves being really honest with each other and opening up and sharing. I... ah, don't want to talk about my experience with that just now. It involved Getaway. Anyway--! The romantic one is called Conjunx Endura and the platonic one is Amica Endura. Sometimes you call someone your Conjunx or Amica and realise they'd work better as the other but that's rare. I know quite a few Conjunx, but not a lot of Amicas...
...One of my cousins. He, um... [he points to his shoulder, then down to his elbow.] He makes a bow...and then...sometimes tries to make arrows. But those don't really go well. He makes Adrian make them instead -- a, another cousin.
They're...training to be sharpshooters. Together, because of that. He even uses glasses.
That was an assumption, yes. But also that I was simply subservient to my father and would do his bidding. The "good and obedient" daughter, I suppose.
You can look as ordinary as you want, but it’s not going to help eventually. The only reason I haven’t gone back to jackets and glasses is because it’d be useless at this point.
So basically it’s just like human marriage, in terms of divorce rate...
[ Not that Riptide would know that, but she nearly snickers at him pointing out that these marriages don’t always work the way they’re planned, as if that’s something that could surprise her. Of course, it’s not the thing that concerns her the most, and she takes a moment to figure out how to respond. ]
...Whatever happened with Getaway, I’m sorry. It was bullshit, whatever happened. I don’t need to know any details to know that.
...At least he’s not alone. Sounds like he’s not exactly the sharpest of people, though.
[ Well- wait. She relaxes a little, wondering if this is making Martin more or less comfortable. She can see either happening. It’s nice to have him talking, at least. ]
How old are they? Ivan and Adrian. I mean, compared to you- from what you know.
No divorce. Once you've settled on Amica or Conjunx, it's exceptionally rare to lose that status with the other person. It only happened frequently and got rare because of the war.
